So I recently wrote an article about webmaster tools that are useful when trying to make a buck with internet marketing. Once of those tools is a
link checker. These work well and nice but not so hot when you put your site on a host that doesn't support PHP. I built a great site about all the
Car Dealers In Seattle and never checked to see if any pages beyond the home page worked because the link checker said the links all worked. Turns out since July my 26 page site has only beeen showing the home page. Click any link and you get a solid white page because PHP wasn't supported. Lucky me I found it and fixed the pages but a lesson learned.

Raising Money For A No Kill Animal Shelter
Last Christmas I created a website called
PetsFund.Com. My hope was to get people to do Christmas shopping through the affiliate links and then donate the comission to
Pleading Paws Pet Rescue of Zimmerman Minnesota. This is a no kill animal shelter that operates based on donations. Unfortunately we only raised $30.00. This year I thought i'd try something differen't. Since the site is now a year old it's gotten a small amount of page rank. This makes buying advertising space a viable way to rais funds for this Minnesota animal shelter. If this model works I should be able to repeat the effort each year. My goal is to sell 90 text links for $10.00 each. That is a significant amount more than we did last year.

I've got some huge sites that have all the links on the home page. People say you should not have more than 100 links on any page. My Texas Ford Dealers site has 149 links on the home page. To try and reduce this i've made separate pages and moved the links to
San Antonio ,
Austin ,
Dallas ,
Fort Worth and
El Paso Ford Dealers. This reduced the number of links on the site by 10-15 but i'm still link heavy. I may have to grap a map of Texas and create North Central and South Texas Ford Dealers to clear this up. Hopefully it will be a positive move for the site.

New Roomba Dirt Dog
As you may recall I recently became the owner of a
Roomba Scheduler which cleans my living room each day and a Roomba Scooba which cleans my kitchen. Now iRobot has come out with a robot for my basement, the Roomba Dirt Dog. This acts like a shopvac taking in dirt, wood chips and in my case LOTS of dog hair. The price will be $129.99 and is scheduled to go on sale 9/15/2006.
Over Linking on Home Pages
I've decided that on some sites there are too many links to inside pages on the home page of a site. Take for example a site I run about
Car Dealers In Illinois. Most of the various sections about brands of cars are balanced. The section about
Ford Dealers in Illinois was NOT balanced. There were 101 links to Ford Dealers in Illinois. I decided to create a sub page for the Ford Dealers to reduce the number of links on the home page. I can then build backlinks to this sectional page.
Google A/B Testing Results 468 banner vs 300 square
Google released a new a/b testing script which lets you run two sets of ad units and it will rotate them roughly 50% each. I've been running this on two sites. First my
Pennsylvania Malls site and then my
Georgia Malls site. In both cases I rotated the 468x90 banner against the 300x250 medium square which is my favorite adsense block. The results after seven days are that performance of either is fairly similar however there is a difference. The 468x90 produced about 1% better conversion rate than the 300x250 however the cpm on the 468x90 was about $2.00 less than using the 300x250. So I got more clicks but was paid less. I'm going to set both sites back to a full time 300x250 and see if my cpm stays the same or changes.

Loving The Roomba
My wife pulled the sneak card and bought a
Roomba Scheduler from irobot and then a irobot Scooba while I was out of town on business. Most husband would be ticked but the Roomba Vacuum does an excellent job and is really impressive. With robots vacuuming my carpets and washing my floors I feel quite modern. The irobot Roomba starts vacuuming my carpet each day at 4:00pm and is done by the time I'm home from work. Nice!!!
Alpharetta Georgia
So I visited Alpharetta Georgia this week. I actually have a web page about
North Point Mall which is in Alpharetta. I live in Minnesota and found that we're very similar but in a strange way. So in Minnesota we have many suburbs surrounding the Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Each suburb will have 1-5 major big box stores and the 2-3 richest and upscale suburbs will have 1-3 of the high quality chain restaurants. The point is you must cross city lines to visit all of the big box stores and restaurants.
Alpharetta Georgia is a large upscale suburb of Atlanta. Here you'll find EVERY big box retailer like Home Depot, Michaels, Best Buy, Linens & Things etc. You'll also find EVERY chain restaurant like California Pizza Kitchen, PF Changs and Famous Daves all within a 10 mile radius surrounding North Point Mall. Very interesting indeed.
All in all Alpharetta is a beautiful place especially if your used to the tree coverage we have in Minnesota.
Google Adsense A / B testing script
Google Adsense has released a script that will let you rotate two ad units and see which works better. Basically you create two channels then insert the new script in your page with code from when you create your ad units. For the non-web guys like me I was confused at first by the instructions at the
Adsense Blog. I did get it working however so you can see my code below and see what I removed to make it work. So far my testing is not conclusive but very helpful so i'm glad they provided us adsense publishers this valuable tool.
